What’s In A Name

My mother gave me a heavy name

Nihal, from the Arabic verb yanhal

Meaning to absorb:

Knowledge, water

Mostly knowledge

I like to think being smart

Is better than being full of water

In Hindu my name means cherished, beautiful

Like that isn’t asking for much

Thank you, Mom

Couldn’t I have been

Named after something

A little more objective?

Couldn’t I have been Summer?

Sarah? Layla?

I like flowers

Wouldn’t have minded one

Being my namesake

In Farsi,

I’m a growing palm tree

So I guess that’s as close to a flower

As I’m going to get
